🐾 Hot Weather Tips for Dogs

Here’s a helpful guide for keeping your rescue pups (and any dog) cool during the upcoming warm spell in Surrey and Hampshire:

  1. plenty of fresh, cool water

Always provide plenty of water and make sure to replace daily —indoors, outdoors, and on walks. Adding a few ice cubes can help keep it chilly longer.

2. Walk smart

Stick to early mornings or late evenings when temps are lower. Use the ā€œhand testā€ā€”if it’s too hot to hold your hand on pavement for 5–7 seconds, it’s too hot for paws

3. Create shade & cool zones

Set up shady spots, use fans, or leave damp towels and cooling mats for them to lie on (medivetgroup.com).

4. Use a paddling pool

Hope isn't sure about swimming, but she's sure she's landed on her paws with her new mum.

A shallow, cool paddling pool is perfect. Fill it halfway with cold (not ice-cold!) water in shade. Add toys or ice cubes to encourage play, but supervise to prevent overheating from splashing around (bluecross.org.uk).

5. frozen treats

Ice lollies, Kong toys stuffed with watermelon or plain yogurt, or frozen broth cubes make for refreshing, fun snacks.

6. heatstroke signs

Watch for excessive panting, drooling, red gums, unsteadiness, vomiting, or collapse. If you see any, move your pup to shade or a cool room, wet their coat with lukewarm water, and get to the vet immediately (medivetgroup.com).

7. HOT SURFACES & midday sun

Protect their paws and skin—especially for light or short-coated breeds—with sunscreen and careful walking choices (medivetgroup.com). Avoid leaving them in cars at any time when outside temps hit ≄22 °C .

8. Supervise play

Let them splash and cool off in the pool, but keep an eye out—overactive play in water can still lead to overheating .

āœ”ļø Paddling Pool Setup Tips

  • Place in a shaded spot and fill halfway with cool water.

  • Add toys (like your pup’s fave ball) or a few ice cubes to entice them in.

  • Check for easy exit (a ramp or stable sides); always supervise.

  • Help them engage: sit or step in yourself, toss treats near the edge, then into the water once they're curious

By combining these steps—paddling pool fun, smart timing, shade and hydration—you’ll help your rescue pup beat the heat safely and happily throughout the week šŸŒž
